When you are faced with challenges that feel overwhelming, it’s natural and healthy to turn to others for help. Sometimes, however, there are parts of the challenge that we must face alone or that we struggle with internally. At these times, I find it helpful to have images that I can call forth in my mind that evoke strength and resilience. The visual representation is something I can draw upon to remind myself that I DO have the inner resources to cope with the situation.
Here are some descriptions of the mental pictures I find helpful and restorative:
- A mountain. There are many guided meditations that use this image to evoke strength. Mountains stand tall and firm through the harsh winters and gentle summers. This is a great metaphor for the storms and the calms of our lives.
- A body of water. Similar to the mountain metaphor, we can see how the ocean or a lake’s surface may be tossed around in the wind while there always remains an underlying calm and centred depth.
- A golden ball of light. This is one of my favourites. You can try visualizing a healing warm quality to the light and picture it resting in the center of your body, feeding and nourishing you.
- A real place of calm in your life. This could be a favourite park or building or perhaps a recollection of your childhood home. Pick something that evokes feelings of calm and focus.
- A group of well wishers. You might think of this as your personal cheering squad. Even if your support people are unable to be physically with you, it is heartening to imagine them standing in a circle around you, directing positive thoughts and love toward you. Your circle may include people you know and also icones or mentors that you respect and admire. The important part is that you allow yourself to accept the love they share with you.
