What are chronic diseases / chronic health conditions?
These are health challenges that cannot be cured but can be controlled through lifestyle, medication, and/or other supportive therapies. Some examples include:
- Diabetes (Type 1 and 2)
- Asthma
- Heart disease
- Epilepsy
- Chronic pain
- Crohn’s disease
- Arthritis
- And more…
There is no question that people with chronic health conditions lead productive and fulfilling lives. We have careers, raise families and contribute positively to society. As a Type 1 diabetic, I know that I can (and do) thrive.
However, there can also be a toll from the constant attention and management of a lifelong condition. There is no vacation from the monitoring and the vigilance. While those of us with chronic health issues appreciate the gift of life, it can be exhausting as well!
I speak from experience when I say that sometimes the cumulative effects of managing one’s condition can lead to feeling depressed and isolated. Sometimes it is frustrating to work so hard at being well but still not have perfect control. Sometimes we can feel like we are burdening our loved ones. Sometimes we can feel angry at life for the extra challenges in our circumstance. Sometimes we feel guilty because we know there are others worse off.
All of these feelings are normal. Yet, if unaddressed, these feelings negatively impact our daily lives and relationships.
If you feel the emotional toll of your health management, please contact me. I can help you to explore and process your challenges. We can work together to normalize the experience, to grieve the hardships and to move forward with renewed hope and energy.
